DOOM BAR MAGHULL NOVICES’ CHASE GRADE 1 – REVIEW

San Benedeto

8th April 2017 – April – He is probably the best placed horse of the season as he has won a lot more prize money than his ability level would merit. He was very fortunate here as he looked booked for third place before the leader tripped over and the subsequent leader pricked his ears and possibly waited in front a little. San Benedeto is going to be rated well above his ability level after this grade one success.

Forest Bihan

8th April 2017 – April – It is possible that the leader was just getting the better of him after the last fence. I suspect he then stopped in front on the run in. I think he would have beaten the eventual winner if Politilogue had stood up. I am less sure he would have beaten the grey.

Charbel

8th April 2017 – April – It was interesting to hear Kim Bailey suggest that this course might be a bit tight for him. Personally I thought the long straights would play to his strengths. He lost all chance with two mistakes down the far side. They both occurred on the straight part of the course so I doubt the sharp nature of the track could be blamed. He jumped better at Cheltenham and who knows whether or not that heavy fall played a part in his less convincing jumping today.

Politilogue

8th April 2017 – April – He has to go down as an unlucky loser as he stumbled two or three strides after the last after looking like he had just got the better of his nearest rival. He could be a force to be reckoned with over two miles on soft ground in the middle of winter. The Shloer Chase might be an early target for him.
