AINTREE HURDLE GRADE 1 – REVIEW

Supasundae

4th April 2019 – Aintree – On the one hand there was certainly no fluke about this victory and, on the other, his success supports the notion that this was not the strongest of grade one races. Maybe the runner up is not as good as he was or, just as likely, a bit below form here. I also think it is more than possible that the favourite did not quite get home and merely beat two non-stayers when winning the 2017 renewal of this contest. This is Supasundae’s perfect trip and he probably enjoyed close to his ideal conditions here – unlike most if not all of his rivals.

Buveur D’Air

4th April 2019 – Aintree – He was undoubtedly put off his stride when being hampered by Melon falling at the third last hurdle; at the same time, he still jumped the second last in the lead so had plenty of chance to get himself organised enough to win this race if he were good enough. The pundits suggested he might not be as good as he was and, whilst this could be true, it is also equally possible that he did not quite get home in the ground or even had an off day.

Ch’tibello

4th April 2019 – Aintree – His proximity in third plus the name of the winner strongly suggests that this was not a vintage renewal of this race. He may not have had to get home to finish in third as he did not finish in front of anything the way the race panned out. The soft ground would not have been ideal for him.

Summerville Boy

4th April 2019 – Aintree – He made a bad blunder at the second hurdle down the far side and gradually lost ground thereafter. He has plenty of ability but has not put in a good jumping display in any of his latest four races.

Silver Streak

4th April 2019 – Aintree – The rain did not help his cause and he was beaten a long way from home. I would not use this race as proof of him not appreciating this extra distance.

Melon

4th April 2019 – Aintree – He was very keen early on and this factor along with the extra half mile points to the likelihood of him not playing a part in the finish if he had stood up. I am not certain on this point, how could anyone be; however, this is how it looked to me.

Faugheen

4th April 2019 – Aintree – He pulled up early and this may be the last we see of him.
