CASPIAN CAVIAR GOLD CUP GRADE 3 – REVIEW

Frodon

10th December 2016 – Cheltenham – He gave his fences plenty of daylight today perhaps with his blunder at the last meeting in mind. I suspect that he has been intensively schooled since November but that is just an educated guess. The rain may have been in his favour as they would have gone a stride slower as a result and thus possibly helped with his jumping. Either way, this was a tremendous effort and one that suggests he is right towards the top of this season’s novice chasers over this sort of distance. He is versatile with regards to the ground but I would still prefer him more on a softer surface.

Aso

10th December 2016 – Cheltenham – Time may tell that he was beaten by a very good winner today. He will be one to have on side in another decent handicap chase when the ground rides soft.

Village Vic

10th December 2016 – Cheltenham – I think pounds per lengths are an irrelevance to him. He just simply performs well in these conditions and can continue to do so irrespective of his mark. Conversely he might appear to be especially badly in if competing on a different course.

Quite By Chance

10th December 2016 – Cheltenham – He handled this step up in trip well and would have finished much closer but for being hampered at the 12th fence. This makes it three top runs in a row in decent handicap chases. Hopefully he will be left alone or only raised by a pound or two for this run.

Kylemore Lough

10th December 2016 – Cheltenham – The heavy rain played to his strengths and he ran an excellent race off a big weight. His claims appeared to have disappeared when he stumbled badly on landing three from home. However, he rallied in tremendous style to take it up from the last fence. He may have tired badly close home but this was still a very good effort in a race that could work out well. He had the profile of a small field bully coming into this contest; the quality of this effort, however, suggests he might be equally at home in more competitively run affairs. He will need cut in the ground to be at his best.

Bouvreuil

10th December 2016 – Cheltenham – He would have been better without the rain I think. His form round Cheltenham is of a high quality; that said he has still not managed to get his head in front in five attempts which may be significant.

Buywise

10th December 2016 – Cheltenham – he did not enjoy the easiest trip round and for once it was not all his own doing. He remains a horse that we would go skint following despite him also being a great favourite of mine to watch.

Full Shift

10th December 2016 – Cheltenham – The soft ground was not in his favour and as a result of running five races in less than perfect conditions he is now 6lbs below the mark he finished a close up fourth in the Plate off at the 2016 Cheltenham Festival. He would be unlikely to get in the same race this season off 129 so his connections might have another target in mind. He has a good record round Kempton over about two and a half miles and will need a decent surface to show his best form.

Thomas Brown

10th December 2016 – Cheltenham – I do not like him on this sort of soft ground. Moreover, he is also a most unreliable proposition and is a horse with more than his share of quirks. I prefer him when he is racing as a fresh horse after a long break; consequently, I would mark him up if we did not see him again until late January. Perhaps he would be on my shortlist if racing after a break in the Skybet Chase in late January.

Aloomomo

10th December 2016 – Cheltenham – He was stronger in the market once the rain became heavier. He ran well enough but was out of contention when falling three out. The stable has had a few of its better horses that have underperformed recently which will not always be the case.

Module

10th December 2016 – Cheltenham – He was quite fancied by his connections despite his profile offering little encouragement of him staying this extended trip on rain softened ground.

King’s Odyssey

10th December 2016 – Cheltenham – He was going as well as most if not all when coming down at the 12th fence. He will need testing ground to be seen in his best light and remains an interesting prospect for another day.
