MERSEY NOVICES’ HURDLE GRADE 1 – REVIEW

Reserve Tank

6th April 2019 – Aintree – He was the joint leader for the first five hurdles and then remained just behind the leaders on the rail until the home straight. He enjoyed the best trip round in what was a relatively slowly run affair. He covered less ground than one or two rivals that attacked very wide round the final bend. He was probably given the best ride so enjoyed plenty of advantages here; that said, the way he drew clear when challenged would support the likelihood of him also being the best horse in the race on the day. He has improved significantly in a very short space of time and has beaten a decent field rather than a top class group of horses in this grade one race. He has been kept away from the soft ground in the middle of winter so presumably his connections are of the opinion that this sounder surface suits him best.

Brewin’upastorm

6th April 2019 – Aintree – He briefly looked a danger to the winner as he came to challenge after the second last flight. He was ultimately left behind in the final stages by an impressive looking winner. He just seems to lack a bit of pace over hurdles and he is one I would hope will be better over fences.

Angels Breath

6th April 2019 – Aintree – This slow pace over an extra half a mile was not in his favour as once again he pulled far too much for his own good. He just about got home on the day; that said this would not be the race to judge him on. His connections, at least, clearly feel he is a lot better than he has appeared to be in his recent races. I would like to see him race as a fresh horse off a fast pace over an intermediate trip.

One For Rosie

6th April 2019 – Aintree – He is the obvious horse to mark up from this run. He was last for much of this slowly run race which was the worst place to be. He did make some late headway and would probably have finished a fair bit closer with a more judicious ride. At least this race would suggest that he is not out of place at this level; consequently he might be worth considering off 145 in a handicap next season.

Chosen Mate

6th April 2019 – Aintree – He did not enjoy the best of trips through the field but probably still finished in his rightful place.

Umbrigado

6th April 2019 – Aintree – This was as good as he was on the day. Perhaps he will be best on a softer surface?

Kateson

6th April 2019 – Aintree – His mistake two out only accentuated his losing margin. He raced five wide off the home bend and lost many lengths as a result. On the balance of his five runs over hurdles he will need soft ground to show his best form.

The Big Bite

6th April 2019 – Aintree – He made the running at a slow pace until three out. He is another that will appreciate softer conditions.

Colonel Custard

6th April 2019 – Aintree – He is yet another that will be best with cut in the ground. At least according to the handicapper he was also out of his depth here.
