PUNCHESTOWN CHAMPION HURDLE GRADE 1 – REVIEW

Buveur D’Air

3rd May 2019 – Punchestown – He looked very impressive from two out to the winning line. This looked to be run at a decent clip; however comparisons with the novice hurdle won by Gardens Of Babylon would suggest otherwise. The Henderson horse was a couple of seconds behind the novice winner half way down the far side and was still just behind turning for home. He made up that deficit and matched the time of Gardens of Babylon by being quicker from the turn to the line.  The runner up inherited second spot after being outpaced throughout before staying on past tiring rivals. The next two home were outsiders which has to cast some doubt on the validity of this form. I certainly do not think that Buveur D’Air has proved that he is back to his best by beating a horse that needs two and a half miles and in a race where the joint favourite and the fourth favourite both flopped.

Supasundae

3rd May 2019 – Punchestown – He stayed on past beaten horses after being outpaced for much of this contest. The other two horses in the first four in the betting both ran well below form so he has had to do very little to grab second place.

Wicklow Brave

3rd May 2019 – Punchestown – He has run well in this before and did so again here. That said this is as good as he is and possibly a little more than he is given the way the race unfolded.

Petit Mouchoir

3rd May 2019 – Punchestown – His proximity in fourth spot adds substance to the possibility of this being a below average renewal of this grade one race.

Apple’s Jade

3rd May 2019 – Punchestown – She was never at the head of affairs and this in itself may have played a part in her never travelling throughout the race. She always appeared to be doing too much and, although she stayed on when it was all over, she never actually looked like playing a part in the finish.

Summerville Boy

3rd May 2019 – Punchestown – He made a bad mistake at the second and was less than fluent at a couple of other hurdles. Nonetheless this performance was still a step in the right direction.

Melon

3rd May 2019 – Punchestown – He raced prominently but soon dropped away when the pace quickened up. This was a very disappointing display.
