WEST YORKSHIRE HURDLE GRADE 2 – REVIEW

Proschema

29th October 2022 – Wetherby – Another fascinating contest and another winner for a Dan Skelton horse that stayed widest of all throughout. I doubt Harry could have asked for a more amenable target to aim at from before the final hurdle than the eventual runner up. The first three horses clear on the approach to the final hurdle were the three to stay away from the inside. Only Oscar Elite of those three failed to last home from the last to the line. The winner will need decent ground and is said to be earmarked for the Long Distance Hurdle at Newbury next. He has now proved his stamina for three miles whilst competing on a decent surface.

Thomas Darby

29th October 2022 – Wetherby – He remains a horse more likely to travel well before failing to find in a finish. He was probably helped by staying wide here and I will be taking this into account when assessing the quality of his performance. My hope is for him to drop slightly in grade and trade very short against one or two more tenacious rivals.

Threeunderthrufive

29th October 2022 – Wetherby – Presumably this run will have set him up for a return to chasing in the Coral Gold Cup. I thought he ran perfectly okay for a prep run and my guess is that his connections will be satisfied with his performance.

Sporting John

29th October 2022 – Wetherby – My best guess is that his greatest chance of picking up a good prize will be in a slog through soft ground over this sort of distance or possibly over an intermediate trip. I am not certain given the lack of course evidence this season; however, I think it is very likely that his claims were significantly reduced by sticking towards the inside for most of the race.

Oscar Elite

29th October 2022 – Wetherby – This makes it 11 defeats in a row which must be a stat to bear in mind. He was probably helped by racing wide and then stopped quickly on the approach to the final hurdle when appearing set to be placed third at worst. Maybe he needed the run or perhaps he bled yet again. Hopefully this race will set him up for a return to chasing where I would slightly prefer his chances over a trip just shy of three miles.

Indefatigable

29th October 2022 – Wetherby – I would guess she was inconvenienced by staying close to the inside rail throughout. This was disappointing as her trainer had mentioned the significance of staying on the better ground on the outside when she won this race last season.
